SGS congress

The 6th congress of the Federation of General and Special workers in Iceland (SGS) was held on October 11-12 in Selfoss, Iceland.

The supreme power in the affairs of SGS is held by the federation’s congress every second year where 135 elected representatives of the 19 affiliated unions gather. Every member union has the right to send at least one representative, irrespective of the relevant union’s size. The congress of SGS decide on the policy of the federation and its leadership is elected. 
 
The congress was opened by the SGS’s chairman, Björn Snæbjörnsson, followed with speeches from Gylfi Arnbjörnsson, the president of ASÍ – The Icelandic Confederation of Labour, and Þorsteinn Víglundsson, minister of Social Affairs and Equality in Iceland. Four resolutions were approved at the congress; on housing and welfare, on family-friendly society, on labour market issues and on pensions. The federation’s budget was approved for the next two years as well as a work plan for 2018-2019. Special attention was also paid to the rules regarding union membership and the possible coordination of rules between sickness funds.
 
Björn Snæbjörnsson was re-elected as a chairman of SGS for the next two years and Hjördís Þ. Sigurþórsdóttir was re-elected as a vice-chairman. 

The members of the SGS’s Executive Committee were elected as following: Aðalsteinn Á. Baldursson, Halldóra Sveinsdóttir, Kolbeinn Gunnarsson, Guðrún Elín Pálsdóttir and Ragnar Ólason.

Deputies: Vilhjálmur Birgisson, Anna Júlíusdóttir, Þórarinn Sverrisson, Linda Baldursdóttir and Guðmundur Finnbogason.

Information

The Nordic Union for Hotel, Restaurant, Catering and Tourism sector, is an association of unions in Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, all of which unionise workers of the HRCT industry. The member unions have all made collective agreements with employers organizations and companies in the NU HRCT.

All in all NU HRCT covers seven unions with a total of about 115,000 members.
